History
France presented Lady Liberty as a gift to the United States to celebrate 100 years of independence in 1876. In one hand she holds the Declaration of Independence, and in the other she raises the torch of freedom. The Statue of Liberty began life as a dream in the mind of French sculptor Frédéric Bartholdi. With help from architect Gustave Eiffel, of Eiffel Tower fame, the beautiful copper sculpture gained a strong steel framework. American architect Richard Morris Hunt completed the collaboration between art and engineering by designing the base on which the statue would rest. By 1924, the statue had been declared a National Monument, bringing it under the protection of the National Park Service. Along with the statue, Liberty Island and nearby Ellis Island are part of the National Monument.
